PaperPaw 0.6.0-beta.1 Beta
Sharper letters, libraries of any size, a power menu and six language packs. This is a beta: keep a copy of your books.
What is new
- Sharper letters. Text is fitted to the pixel grid, so it looks even and crisp on the screen. A new setting, Sharpness, has three choices: Soft, Normal and Sharp. You find it under Reading, Display. Pages break as before.
- Libraries of any size. The X4 no longer stops at 2,000 books. On a new card you can read the books found so far while PaperPaw collects the rest, and the reader stays awake. A new button looks for books you copied to the card.
- Search finds tags. A search with many hits lists the first 500 and says so.
- Arrow keys stay on the page. A new setting under Controls, off at first: the arrows go round within the page, and only the page buttons turn pages.
- Smaller menu text. Menus start at 8 pt, not 9 pt. A size you chose stays, and the size of the book text does not change. The quick panel now starts at the top edge.
- Six language packs in the store. Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic, Korean, and Korean with more syllables. Arabic, Hebrew and Korean bring their keyboards. The Arabic menus are new, and nobody on the team reads Arabic: please tell us what is wrong.
- A power menu. Hold the power button for Sleep, Switch off and Restart. A short press still sleeps.
- A wider keyboard and a landscape home screen. Other screens lay themselves out again when you turn the reader.
- New plugins in the store. Mail, a notes vault, MOBI and DOCX books, pictures as books, flash cards and an end of book page. Plugins that work with a service have a general name now.
- Smaller firmware. Bold and italic Literata come as a small pack from the store. That leaves more room for plugins.
Updating
- Update as usual: with the Update plugin, the web flasher or the update file. Your books, reading positions and settings stay. Each book is laid out again once, the first time you open it.
- Plugins with code need a new build for this version. PaperPaw's own plugins are in the store. A plugin from someone else works again when its author builds it again.
- After you swap the memory card, restart the reader.
Good to know
- Cards formatted as exFAT do not work yet. Use FAT32.
- The X3 and the X4 Classic are experimental: they were tested on a computer, not on a device.
- Arabic, Hebrew and Persian have not been checked by someone who reads them.
Get it
- Install or update with the web flasher.
- The files and the full list of changes are on the release page. The app for Android e-readers is there too.
