Flashing needs a browser that can talk to a USB device: Chrome, Edge or Opera on a computer. Firefox and Safari cannot, nor can phones.
Which reader do you have?
About five minutes, in Chrome or Edge on a computer. You can always go back.
Experimental readers
Built, but not yet tried on a real reader. Flashing is at your own risk, and Xteink's warranty does not cover unofficial firmware. The backup you save first brings back the firmware it came with.
An X3 bought from xteink.com is not locked. If yours does not show up in the browser's list, it may be locked, and PaperPaw cannot be put on it safely.

Connect your Reader
Plug it into this computer with a USB-C cable and switch it on. Then pick it in the list your browser shows, “USB JTAG/serial debug unit”.
Save a backup
Save the firmware it came with on this computer, 16 MB. It takes about two minutes. Keep the file: it is your way back.
This reader runs PaperPaw already, so it needs no backup: its versions can always be written again from here.
An experimental reader always needs a backup: it is the way back.
Without that file there is no way back to Xteink's firmware on this reader. Keep it safe.
Write PaperPaw
The reader restarts by itself when it is done. Books go on a microSD card.

Keep the cable in until it is done.
Done
Your reader starts PaperPaw now. If the screen does not change, unplug the cable once and plug it in again. Books go on a microSD card formatted as FAT32.

Help
Is my reader locked?
Some Xteink readers, mostly from other sellers, are locked at the factory: secure boot, flash encryption or a closed download mode. PaperPaw cannot run on them, and writing to them can break them for good. This page checks first and stops if a reader is locked, or if it cannot tell. Then unplug it and do not try other tools.
Go back to the firmware it came with
Choose your backup file, connect the reader and write it back. This works on any Xteink reader here.
No file chosen yet
The reader is not in the list
Try another USB cable: some only charge. Switch the reader on, and use Chrome, Edge or Opera on a computer.
It stopped halfway
Unplug the reader, plug it in again, reload this page and start again. A backup can always be written back.
It does not start?
Unplug the reader. On the X4 Classic, hold one of the side buttons while you plug it in again, and if that does not help, the other: one of them starts it ready for flashing. On the X3, just plug it in again. Then connect it here and write your backup back, under Go back to the firmware it came with.
Nothing leaves your computer
This page talks to the reader directly, through the browser. The backup is saved on this computer and never sent anywhere; the firmware and the tool that writes it come from this site.

What happened, in detail. If the reader crashed, add the file .paperpaw/crashes.txt from its card to a report: PaperPaw writes it at the next start.
