PaperPaw is a beta: for testing, and for developers, who can build their own plugins before the release. Expect rough edges.

Platforms and support

Check your reader, the release it runs, and the limits that still apply.

Beta until 1.0. This matrix describes the published v0.6.0-beta.3 release. A build being available does not mean its hardware has been tested. No platform has a stable support promise yet.

Reviewed · v0.6.0-beta.3

Supported
A qualified scope with an explicit support commitment. No current row has this status.
Beta
Available for testing, with known limits. Back up your books and settings.
Untested
Code or a build exists, but the claimed hardware or behavior has not been qualified.
Not supported
Not available in this release or outside the implemented scope.

Availability and limits in the published beta
PlatformStatusScope and limits
X4BetaFirmware for the button-operated reader, with a 256 KiB heap budget. Uses FAT32. Stable recovery and upgrade qualification is still open.
X4 ProBetaFirmware with buttons, touch, frontlight and Bluetooth page turners. Stable recovery, radio and upgrade qualification is still open; X4 results alone do not qualify the Pro.
X4 ClassicUntestedExperimental build, not tried on real hardware. Buttons only, no frontlight. Its own partition layout must preserve factory panel data; an X4 Pro image is not a substitute.
X3UntestedExperimental build for unlocked readers with the UC8253 panel, not tried on real hardware. Uses X4 store builds. Card power, panel orientation, buttons and battery behavior remain unverified.
Android appBetaarm64 only, Android 8 / API 26 or later. Documented test device: a monochrome reader on Android 13. Built-in and data plugins are available; external native code plugins are not. Colour hardware and upgrade/data preservation across supported versions still need qualification.
Desktop emulator: Windows x64BetaA beta development emulator, not firmware for the reader it depicts. Minimum Windows and macOS versions have not been qualified; a downloadable build is not proof for every OS version.
Desktop emulator: macOS arm64BetaA beta development emulator, not firmware for the reader it depicts. Minimum Windows and macOS versions have not been qualified; a downloadable build is not proof for every OS version.
Desktop emulator: macOS x64BetaA beta development emulator, not firmware for the reader it depicts. Minimum Windows and macOS versions have not been qualified; a downloadable build is not proof for every OS version.
Desktop emulator: Linux x64Betax64 build available. Minimum-distribution execution tests for beta.3 remain open. Earlier beta.2 binaries required GLIBC_2.39; this does not establish a minimum for beta.3. Do not assume Debian 12 compatibility.
Browser emulatorBetaA beta browser emulator. Hardware profiles simulate a reader; they do not prove hardware support, power behavior, storage durability or recovery. Browser smoke qualification remains part of release QA.
X3 with UC8279dNot supportedUnits with the newer UC8279d panel are not driven by this release. NFC and tilt sensing are not implemented on the X3.
Other reader profilesNot supportedAdditional desktop/browser profiles are simulations only. There is no installable firmware for the other reader families depicted there.

Languages

English and German are built in. Arabic and Spanish are available as beta language packs. Packs and fonts can be published independently. A translated interface does not guarantee every book script, glyph or layout is supported.

Updates, recovery and plugin compatibility

Keep a full flash backup before replacing firmware. The saved backup is the recovery route after a whole-device flash. Signed updates use the inactive slot and a 30-second running-time trial; rollback does not restore card data or undo installed plugin changes. Direct upgrades from every old beta to 1.0 remain unqualified.

The interface number alone is not enough: native plugins also need the matching target, compiler, ABI fingerprint and required API/family revisions. Native code runs without a sandbox. A flat plugin boundary for interface 7 is being developed before 1.0. It is not released yet; the final 1.x compatibility and maintenance commitment is not established.

Plugins and language packs are published independently of firmware and do not block a firmware release. New plugins may require newer firmware; beta users update firmware rather than receiving every feature backported.

exFAT is required in the planned 1.0 scope, but is not shipped in beta.3 and is not qualified yet. No future release number or stable date is promised here. Platform statuses change only after evidence review; firmware 1.0 will not automatically make Android, emulators or untested readers stable.
