PaperPaw is a beta: for testing, and for developers, who can build their own plugins before the release. Expect rough edges.

Power and sleep

How the reader sleeps, switches off and spends its battery. Names in bold are the names on the reader's screen.

The Power button

Press Power once to put the reader to sleep, and again to wake it. The reader goes to sleep when you let go of the button.

Hold Power to open the power menu. Back closes it without a choice.

Sleeping and waking

The reader goes to sleep when you press Power, when you choose Sleep in the power menu or the quick panel, and by itself when you have not used it for a while.

Sleep after sets that time in minutes. It goes from 0 to 120 in steps of 5 and starts at 10. 0 means never. It is in the settings under Device, Power.

While the reader sleeps, the screen shows the sleep screen. At first it is a sleeping cat, and the e-ink screen keeps it without power. To choose another picture, open the settings under Device, Sleep screen, Show. See Settings.

The X4 wakes at once when you press Power, on the page where you left it. The X4 Pro switches off when it sleeps, so a press of Power starts it again. That takes a moment longer.

Switching off after sleeping

The X4 does not switch off when it goes to sleep. It sleeps first and switches off after a while. Switch off after sleeping sets how long, in the settings under Device, Power.

  • At once, After 15 minutes, After 30 minutes (at first), After 1 hour, After 2 hours or Never.

While the X4 charges over USB, it stays asleep and the time does not run. Only At once switches it off anyway.

Never keeps the X4 asleep, which uses a little battery all the time. A nearly empty battery still switches it off.

The X4 Pro has no such setting. It switches off as soon as it goes to sleep, and the picture on the screen stays.

Power mode

Power mode decides how PaperPaw spends the battery. Change it in the quick panel or in the settings under Device, Power.

ModeWhat it does
AutoChooses by the battery. This is the mode at first
NormalEverything as you set it
SavingWhat can wait waits for a better moment. Sleep after is 5 minutes at most. On the X4 Pro the front light is half bright at most
OfflineAs Saving, and the radio stays off: what needs the network waits until you go online. The front light is 30 % bright at most

Auto switches to Saving below 20 % and to Offline below 10 %. Change the levels with Saving below and Offline below. Normal while charging is on at first: while the reader charges, Auto stays in Normal.

Wi-Fi switches itself off

On the X4 and X4 Pro, Wi-Fi is off until something needs it. Then it switches on, joins a saved network and switches off again 1 minute after the last use. Change that with Switch off after in the Wi-Fi settings (30 seconds to 10 minutes). On while charging (on at first) keeps Wi-Fi on while the reader charges. See Wi-Fi. On Android the system manages Wi-Fi.

The front light (X4 Pro)

Only the X4 Pro has a front light. You set it in the quick panel and in the settings under Display. It is off while the reader sleeps.

  • Front light: 0 to 100 %. It is 0, which is off, at first.
  • Light colour: 0 is cool white and 100 is all warm. It starts at 30. Warm light is kinder to the eyes in the evening.
  • Light off after: Never (at first), After 30 seconds, After 1 minute, After 2 minutes or After 5 minutes. The next press or touch brings the light back as it was, and does not turn a page.

Charging and the battery

Plug a USB-C cable into the reader to charge it. The battery symbol in the status line shows that it charges. Battery in percent (on at first) adds the number. Both are set in the settings under Status lines.

The X4 has no battery gauge. It works out the percentage from the voltage, so while it charges the number is only approximate.

Battery when low is a status line item that shows the battery only at Battery low at or below (20 % at first). On the home screen you can also add the widget Battery.

Open Battery in the tools. It shows the charge now, this time awake, the use on battery so far and an estimate of how long the battery lasts at your pace. It needs a while of reading on battery first. Record battery use (under Device, Power) switches the recording off.

When the battery is low

  • Auto changes to Saving and Offline (see above).
  • An update waits: Charge to 20 % or plug in to install.
  • A sleeping X4 on battery switches itself off at 10 % or less, within about ten minutes, whatever Switch off after sleeping says.

Saving battery

  • Set Power mode to Saving, or leave it on Auto.
  • Keep Wi-Fi off when you do not need it, and shorten Switch off after in the Wi-Fi settings.
  • X4 Pro: keep the Front light as low as you can still read, and set Light off after.
  • Raise Full refresh in the settings under Reading, Display, so the screen flashes less often. Faint ghosts may last longer: see Reading.
  • Shorten Sleep after. On the X4, shorten Switch off after sleeping too.
  • Set Button response to Saving in the settings under Controls. A very short tap may be missed.

The reader will not wake or start

  1. Press Power once and wait a moment. After a switch-off the reader needs longer than after sleep.

  2. Plug in the cable and charge the reader for a while, then press Power again.

  3. Unplug the cable, wait a moment and plug it in again.

  4. Hold Back while you switch the reader on (on the X4 Pro hold Home). PaperPaw then starts in safe mode: see the reader does not start.

On the X4, the reader switches off instead of sleeping if Power stays pressed for about 10 seconds while it goes to sleep (a tight case can do this). Press Power to start it. More short answers are in Troubleshooting.
